We hate to say it but summer will be over in a few weeks and with the end of summer comes Cluster Flies (AKA Attic Flies).
Cluster flies are typically 8m to 10mm in length and have light grey / dark grey checkered bodies and lines or stripes behind the head. They look like regular house flies but are slightly larger and slower.
In the fall, Cluster Flies attempt to enter buildings and structures in anticipation of colder weather. They hibernate in hidden areas of commercial and residential buildings – typically wall voids, drop ceilings and attics. They are often difficult to eliminate because of the areas they hide are difficult to access. In the spring they emerge from their hiding spaces. Attracted to light, they gather on windows and their droppings leave stains on walls, window frames, blinds and curtains.
Like most pests, prevention is often the best method for control. Keeping doors and windows closed and make sure screens are properly installed. If you think you have a larger issue, an exterior residual treatment is an effective way to significantly reduce Cluster fly activity.
